Soesterberg - Nationaal Militair Museum

The Dutch former airbase of Soesterberg has a rich history. This airbase was the birthplace of Dutch military aviation and later became home to several Dutch fighter squadrons. From 1954 till 1994 Soesterberg was home to the American USAFE 32th Tactical Fighter Wing called "Wolfhounds". The airbase closed for military operations in 2008 and nowadays this airbase is partially used as an airfield for gliders and a monumental park for leisure. One could walk or cycle down the original runway as well!

The National Military Museum showcases items of all disciplines of the Dutch military.  The museum houses a lot of tanks, vehicles and military equipment. Our interest goes out to the large collection of aircraft such as a Fokker F-27 Troopship, Dornier Do-24 and the F-16A Fighting Falcon. Due to the history with the USAFE as well there are several American planes such as the impressive F-15A Eagle and the F-86 Sabre. One of the expositions is a more scientific approach to aviation and the aeronautical laws in general, this is very interactive for children as well. The indoor museum has an entrance fee, however, the outdoor area can be visited for free (some exceptions with special events). This means that some nice shots can be made after opening hours with sunset for example.

The museum has a lot of special aircraft stored in its depot, and for some occasions some of those aircraft are put on display. Among these "hidden" aircraft are the McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II, the Cessna T-37 Tweet and the Lockheed TF- 104G Starfighter.
